What is Sales Tax?
Sales tax is a consumption tax charged at the point of purchase. In the US, rates vary by state and often by locality. Some states have no sales tax. This calculator helps you add tax to a pre-tax price, work backwards from a total to find the pre-tax amount and tax, or determine the effective tax rate when you know both amounts.
Total = Price × (1 + Rate) | Tax = Total − Price | Rate = (Total − Price) ÷ Price
Add Tax uses the first formula; Extract Tax solves for Price and Tax from Total and Rate; Find Rate solves for the effective rate from Price and Total.
