Was ist Windchill?

Wind chill is the perceived decrease in air temperature felt by the body on exposed skin due to air flow. Wind increases the rate of heat loss from the body, making the temperature feel colder than the actual air temperature. The NWS Wind Chill Index uses a formula based on advances in science, technology, and computer modelling to provide an accurate way to measure cold-weather risk.

NWS Wind Chill Formula

WC = 35.74 + 0.6215×T − 35.75×V0.16 + 0.4275×T×V0.16

Where T = air temperature (°F), V = wind speed (mph)

Gültig, wenn T ≤ 50 °F und V ≥ 3 Meilen pro Stunde

3 Calculation Types

Windkälte

Enter air temperature and wind speed. Get feels-like temperature + risk.

Temperature from WC

Enter wind chill and wind speed. Finds actual air temperature.

Wind Speed from WC

Enter wind chill and temperature. Finds wind speed using iterative solving.

Wind Chill Risk Categories

Wind Chill (°F) Kategorie Effect
≥ 32Kleine GefahrLittle danger for properly clothed person.
0 – 31VorsichtRisk of hypothermia with prolonged exposure.
−1 – −20GefahrExposed skin can freeze in 10 minutes.
−21 – −40High DangerExposed skin can freeze in 5 minutes.
< −40Extreme GefahrExposed skin can freeze in under 2 minutes.

Wichtige Hinweise

  • Wind chill only applies when T ≤ 50 °F (10 °C) and V ≥ 3 mph.
  • Wind chill only affects exposed skin, not inanimate objects.
  • Dress according to wind chill, not just air temperature.
  • Unterstützte Windgeschwindigkeitseinheiten: mph, km/h, m/s.
