What is Wind Chill?
Wind chill is the perceived decrease in air temperature felt by the body on exposed skin due to the flow of air. It makes the temperature feel colder than the actual air temperature.

Wind Chill Index Formula
WC = 35.74 + 0.6215×T - 35.75×V^0.16 + 0.4275×T×V^0.16
Where:
WC = Wind Chill (°F)
T = Air Temperature (°F)
V = Wind Speed (mph)
Applicability
Wind chill applies when:
• Temperature ≤ 50°F (10°C)
• Wind speed ≥ 3 mph (4.8 km/h)
Below these thresholds, wind chill equals air temperature.
Risk Categories
≥ 32°F (0°C):
Little danger from freezing
0°F to 31°F:
Uncomfortable, risk of hypothermia
-20°F to -1°F:
Dangerous, skin can freeze in 10 min
< -40°F:
Extremely dangerous, skin can freeze in 5 min
Temperature Units
Φαρενάιτ (°F): Used in US
Κελσίου (°C): Used internationally
°C = (°F - 32) × 5/9
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
Wind Speed Units
mph: Miles per hour (US)
km/h: Kilometers per hour
m/s: Meters per second
1 mph = 1.60934 km/h = 0.44704 m/s
Σημαντικές Σημειώσεις
- Wind chill only affects exposed skin
- Dress appropriately for wind chill, not just temperature
- Wind chill doesn't affect inanimate objects
- Higher wind speeds increase wind chill effect
- Protect exposed skin in extreme conditions
- Stay indoors when wind chill is dangerous
