From 5 calories to 500: the Starbucks menu's real spread
Few menus anywhere span a wider calorie range than a coffee shop's. A black coffee is essentially free — about 5 calories. A venti caramel frappuccino with whipped cream is dessert wearing a coffee costume, at 500-plus calories and more sugar than a can and a half of soda. Everything else on the board lives somewhere between those poles, and where exactly depends on four choices: the drink, the size, the milk, and the extras.
This calculator lets you assemble your usual order and see the total before the register does. If you've never checked what your daily habit adds up to across a week, brace slightly.
Where the calories hide
Milk is the biggest structural choice: the jump from nonfat to whole milk in a latte adds roughly 60–70 calories, and oat milk lands near whole milk despite its health halo. Syrups run about 20 calories per pump — and a grande flavoured drink typically carries four pumps, which is how 'just a vanilla latte' quietly gains 80 sugar calories. Whipped cream adds 60–110 depending on size. None of these are large alone; stacked in a venti, they're a meal.
The flip side is that the same levers work in reverse, and the drink survives: fewer pumps, no whip, lighter milk. An honest trick worth knowing — ordering the same flavoured latte with half the pumps changes the calories dramatically and the taste barely at all, because the default sweetness is calibrated well past most palates.
Caffeine counts too
The calculator also tracks caffeine, which follows different logic than calories: brewed coffee out-caffeinates espresso drinks, to most people's surprise. A grande brewed coffee carries around 310 mg while a grande latte — two espresso shots — holds about 150 mg. The FDA's guideline for healthy adults is 400 mg a day, a ceiling one venti brewed coffee gets you most of the way toward. Pregnant customers are usually advised to stay under 200 mg, which reshuffles the menu considerably.
For context on where a 300-calorie drink fits in your day, the calorie calculator gives you the daily budget it's coming out of.
