What is a Snow Day?
A snow day is a day when schools and sometimes businesses close due to severe winter weather conditions like heavy snowfall, ice storms, or extreme cold. This calculator uses multiple weather and environmental factors to estimate the probability of your school calling a snow day.
How This Calculator Works
Our Snow Day Calculator uses a weighted scoring model that evaluates 8 different factors. Each factor is scored on a 0–100 scale and then multiplied by its importance weight to produce a final probability.
Probability = Σ (Factor Score × Weight)
Scoring Factors
Snowfall (25%)
The most important factor. 1–2 inches is minor; 4+ inches significantly increases the chance; 8+ inches almost guarantees it.
Temperature (15%)
Extreme cold (below 0°F / -18°C) can cause closures even without snow. Warmer temps near 32°F may mean snow melts quickly.
Ice Accumulation (15%)
Even a thin layer of ice (0.1 inches) makes roads extremely dangerous. Ice storms are a top reason for school closures.
Wind Speed (10%)
High winds cause blowing snow, reduced visibility, and wind chill. Gusts above 30 mph are significant.
Timing (10%)
Snow falling overnight or early morning is most impactful since decisions are made before dawn. Afternoon snow matters less.
Road Conditions (10%)
Existing road conditions determine how safely buses can operate. Icy roads are the biggest concern for transportation.
School History (10%)
Some schools rarely close while others are more cautious. Your school's track record matters.
Location (5%)
Urban areas have better plowing and are less affected than rural areas with long, winding roads.
