What is Golf Handicap?

A golf handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer's potential ability. The World Handicap System (WHS) provides a unified and more inclusive handicapping system for golfers worldwide. It allows players of different skill levels to compete fairly by adjusting scores based on course difficulty and player ability.

How to Use This Calculator

Calculation Types

Handicap Index (WHS)

Calculate Handicap Index from score differentials. Uses best 8 of last 20 differentials (WHS standard). Formula: Average of best differentials × 0.96.

Course Handicap

Calculate Course Handicap from Handicap Index. Formula: CH = (HI × SR / 113) + (CR - Par).

Score Differential

Calculate Score Differential from round score. Formula: SD = (AGS - CR) × (113 / SR).

Net Score

Calculate Net Score from Gross Score and Course Handicap. Formula: Net = Gross - Course Handicap.

Playing Handicap

Calculate Playing Handicap with allowance percentage. Formula: PH = CH × (Allowance / 100).

Key Golf Handicap Formulas

Handicap Index (WHS):

HI = Average of best differentials × 0.96

Course Handicap:

CH = (HI × SR / 113) + (CR - Par)

Score Differential:

SD = (AGS - CR) × (113 / SR)

Net Score:

Net = Gross - Course Handicap

Playing Handicap:

PH = CH × (Allowance / 100)

Where:

  • HI = Handicap Index
  • CH = Course Handicap
  • SR = Slope Rating
  • CR = Course Rating
  • AGS = Adjusted Gross Score
  • 113 = Standard Slope Rating

Important Notes

  • Handicap Index ranges from 0 to 54 (lower is better).
  • Slope Rating ranges from 55 to 155 (113 is standard).
  • Course Rating typically ranges from 60 to 80.
  • WHS uses best 8 of last 20 score differentials for Handicap Index calculation.
  • Score differentials must be between 0 and 200.
  • Course Handicap can be negative for very skilled players.
  • Net Score allows fair competition between players of different skill levels.
  • Handicap Allowance is typically 100% for individual stroke play.
