What is GPA? Understanding Grade Point Average

Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standardized numerical representation of your academic performance. It is calculated by dividing the total quality points you have earned by the total number of credit hours you have attempted. Colleges, universities, and high schools use GPA to evaluate student achievement, determine eligibility for scholarships and honors, and make admissions decisions for graduate programs.

GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credits

Use our GPA calculator above to add your courses, enter grades and credits, and instantly get your semester GPA. You can also calculate your cumulative GPA by entering your existing GPA and credits. All results include detailed step-by-step solutions showing exactly how your GPA was calculated.

GPA Scales: 4.0 vs 4.3 vs 5.0 — Which One Do You Need?

4.0 Scale (Standard Unweighted)

The most widely used GPA scale in the United States. A+ and A both equal 4.0 points. Used by most colleges and universities for admissions and academic standing.

4.3 Scale (A+ Distinction)

Used by some colleges and universities where A+ earns 4.3 points instead of 4.0, allowing students to exceed the traditional maximum. Check if your institution uses this scale.

5.0 Scale (Weighted GPA for AP/Honors)

Used for weighted GPAs that account for advanced, honors, or AP courses. A+ and A earn 5.0 points. Used primarily in high schools to reward students taking challenging courses.

GPA Formulas: Semester GPA & Cumulative GPA

Quality Points per Course:

Important GPA Facts & Tips

  • A 3.0 GPA (B average) is the minimum many employers and graduate schools require. A 3.5+ GPA is considered excellent.
  • Courses with more credit hours have a bigger impact on your GPA. A low grade in a 4-credit course hurts more than in a 1-credit course.
  • The more credits you have earned, the harder it becomes to significantly change your cumulative GPA. Focus on strong performance early.
  • Check with your institution for their specific GPA scale. Grade point values for +/- grades may vary between colleges.
  • This calculator uses NumPy for precise numerical calculations, ensuring accurate GPA results every time.
