What is the Payback Period?
The payback period is the time it takes for an investment to recover its initial cost from the cash flows it generates. This calculator supports uniform annual cash flows (same amount each year), variable cash flows (different amount per year), and a "target payback" mode that tells you how much annual cash flow you need to achieve a desired payback period. Discounted payback accounts for the time value of money.
Modes
- Uniform flows: Same cash flow every year. Payback = Initial investment ÷ Annual cash flow.
- Variable flows: Enter a different cash flow for each year. Simple payback sums flows until investment is recovered; discounted payback uses present values at your discount rate.
- Target payback: Enter how many years you want to recover the investment. The calculator shows the required annual (or monthly) cash flow for simple and discounted payback.
چارٹ کو سمجھنا
Cumulative vs Investment: Line chart of cumulative cash flow over years and a horizontal line at initial investment. Payback occurs where the cumulative line crosses the investment line.
Cash flow by year: Bar chart of cash flow received each year.
اہم نوٹ
- Payback ignores cash flows after the payback date and does not measure total profitability. Use NPV or IRR for full analysis.
- Discounted payback is always longer than simple payback when discount rate is positive.
- If total cash flows never reach the initial investment, payback is not achieved within the period entered.
