What is Scientific Notation?
Scientific notation writes numbers as a mantissa (between 1 and 10, or 0) times a power of 10. For example, 1,500,000 = 1.5 × 10^6. It is used in science and engineering to handle very large numbers (like distances in space) and very small numbers (like atomic sizes) in a compact form.
Các khái niệm chính
- Mantissa (coefficient): A number usually between 1 and 10 (or 0). Example: in 1.5 × 10^6, the mantissa is 1.5.
- Exponent: The power of 10. Example: in 1.5 × 10^6, the exponent is 6, so the value is 1.5 × 1,000,000 = 1,500,000.
- E-notation: Shorthand such as 1.5e6 or 1.5E6 meaning 1.5 × 10^6. Negative exponents for small numbers: 1.5e-3 = 0.0015.
Cách sử dụng máy tính này
- To scientific: Enter a decimal number (e.g. 1500000) to get its scientific form (1.5 × 10^6).
- From scientific: Enter a number in scientific or e-notation (e.g. 1.5e6 or 1.5×10^6) to get the decimal value.
- Add / Subtract / Multiply / Divide: Enter two values (decimal or scientific). The result is shown in both decimal and scientific notation, and the exponent chart compares the two inputs and the result.
Understanding the Chart
Exponent (power of 10): Bar chart of the exponent for your value(s) and the result. Larger exponent means a larger order of magnitude (e.g. 10^9 is a billion).
Ghi chú quan trọng
- You can enter numbers as decimals (1500000), e-notation (1.5e6), or with ×10^ (1.5×10^6).
- Very large or very small results may be shown in scientific notation for readability.
- Division by zero is not allowed; the calculator will show an error.
