What are Body Types?

Body types, also known as somatotypes, are classifications of human body shapes based on skeletal frame size and body composition. The three main body types are ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph, originally proposed by psychologist William Sheldon in the 1940s.

While everyone is unique, understanding your body type can help you make informed decisions about nutrition, exercise, and fitness goals that work best with your natural body structure.

The Three Body Types

Ectomorph

Small frame, naturally lean, fast metabolism

  • Naturally thin and lean build
  • Fast metabolism
  • Difficulty gaining weight
  • Narrow shoulders and hips
  • Long limbs
  • Low body fat percentage

Mesomorph

Medium frame, athletic build, moderate metabolism

  • Athletic and muscular build
  • Moderate metabolism
  • Gains muscle easily
  • Broad shoulders
  • Narrow waist
  • Naturally strong

Endomorph

Large frame, wider build, slower metabolism

  • Naturally wider frame
  • Slower metabolism
  • Stores fat easily
  • Wider hips and shoulders
  • Gains muscle and fat easily
  • Rounder body shape

How Frame Size is Calculated

This calculator uses the wrist-to-height ratio method to determine frame size:

Wrist-to-Height Ratio = (Wrist Circumference / Height) × 100

Small Frame: Wrist-to-height ratio < 9.9%

Medium Frame: Wrist-to-height ratio 9.9% - 10.9%

Large Frame: Wrist-to-height ratio > 10.9%

Frame size is then used to determine body type: Small = Ectomorph, Medium = Mesomorph, Large = Endomorph.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select your preferred unit system (Metric or Imperial)
  2. Measure your wrist circumference at the narrowest point
  3. Measure your ankle circumference at the narrowest point
  4. Enter your height accurately
  5. Click 'Calculate Body Type' to see your results
  6. Review your body type, frame size, and characteristics
  7. Use the charts to visualize your body type classification

How to Take Measurements

Wrist Measurement

Measure around your wrist at the narrowest point, just above the wrist bone. Keep the tape measure snug but not tight. This measurement is used to determine frame size.

Ankle Measurement

Measure around your ankle at the narrowest point, just above the ankle bone. Keep the tape measure level and snug but not tight.

Height Measurement

Stand straight against a wall without shoes. Measure from the floor to the top of your head. For best accuracy, measure in the morning when you're at your tallest.

Tip: For best accuracy, take measurements in the morning before eating, and measure multiple times to ensure consistency.

Understanding Your Results

Body Type

Your primary body type classification (Ectomorph, Mesomorph, or Endomorph). This is determined based on your frame size.

Frame Size

Your skeletal frame size (Small, Medium, or Large) based on your wrist-to-height ratio. This is a key indicator of your body type.

Wrist-to-Height Ratio

The percentage ratio of your wrist circumference to your height. This ratio is used to determine frame size.

Ankle-to-Height Ratio

The percentage ratio of your ankle circumference to your height. This provides additional insight into your body proportions.

Characteristics

A list of typical characteristics associated with your body type. These are general tendencies and may vary from person to person.

Fitness Tips by Body Type

Important Notes

  • Body types are generalizations. Most people are a combination of types rather than purely one type.
  • Your body type doesn't determine your fitness potential. With proper nutrition and exercise, anyone can achieve their fitness goals regardless of body type.
  • Body type classifications are based on frame size measurements and are estimates. Individual variations exist.
