What is Ovulation?

Ovulation is the process in which a mature egg is released from one of the ovaries. This typically occurs once per menstrual cycle, approximately 14 days before the start of your next period. The egg travels down the fallopian tube where it can be fertilized by sperm.

Understanding when you ovulate is crucial for both conception planning and natural family planning. The fertile window includes the days leading up to and including ovulation, when conception is most likely to occur.

Menstrual Cycle Phases

Menstruation (Days 1-5)

The uterine lining is shed. This marks day 1 of your cycle. Typically lasts 3-7 days.

Follicular Phase (Days 1-13)

Follicles in the ovaries begin to mature. Estrogen levels rise, preparing the uterine lining for potential pregnancy.

Ovulation (Day 14, approximately)

A mature egg is released from the ovary. This is your most fertile day. The egg survives for 12-24 hours after release.

Fertile Window (5 days before + ovulation + 1 day after)

The best time for conception. Sperm can survive up to 5 days in the female reproductive tract, so having intercourse in the days leading up to ovulation increases chances of conception.

Luteal Phase (Days 15-28)

After ovulation, the corpus luteum produces progesterone. If pregnancy doesn't occur, hormone levels drop and menstruation begins.

Understanding Your Results

Ovulation Date

The predicted day when ovulation occurs. This is calculated as 14 days before your next expected period. This is your most fertile day.

Fertile Window

The 6-7 day period when conception is most likely. This includes 5 days before ovulation, the day of ovulation, and 1 day after. Sperm can survive up to 5 days, so having intercourse during this window maximizes chances of conception.

Cycle Timeline

A visual representation of your entire cycle showing all phases: menstruation, follicular, fertile window, ovulation, and luteal phase.

Fertility Probability

Shows the estimated probability of conception on each day of your cycle. Peak fertility occurs on ovulation day and the days immediately before it.

Signs of Ovulation

Common signs that ovulation may be occurring:

  • Change in cervical mucus (becomes clear, stretchy, like egg white)
  • Slight increase in basal body temperature
  • Mild pelvic or abdominal pain (mittelschmerz)
  • Increased libido
  • Positive ovulation predictor kit (OPK) result
