Examples

Example 1: 12 and 18

Factors of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12

Factors of 18: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18

Common Factors: 1, 2, 3, 6

GCF: 6

Example 2: 24, 36, and 48

Common Factors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12

GCF: 12

Important Notes

  • All numbers must be positive integers (whole numbers greater than zero).
  • At least 2 numbers are required to find common factors.
  • The number 1 is always a common factor of any set of numbers.
  • If numbers are coprime (relatively prime), their only common factor is 1.
