GPA Scales
4.0 Scale
Most common scale in the United States. A+ and A both equal 4.0.
4.3 Scale
Used by some institutions. A+ equals 4.3, allowing for higher distinction.
5.0 Scale
Used for weighted GPAs, often for honors or AP courses.
GPA Formula
Semester GPA:
GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credits
Quality Points:
Quality Points = Grade Points × Credits
Cumulative GPA:
Cumulative GPA = (Previous Points + New Points) / (Previous Credits + New Credits)
Where:
- Grade Points = Points assigned to letter grade (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.)
- Credits = Credit hours for the course
- Quality Points = Grade Points × Credits
