Multiply length by width and you get the building's footprint, not its roof area. A sloped roof is a tilted plane, and a tilted plane covering the same footprint always has more actual surface than a flat one — the steeper the slope, the more material it takes to cover it. Pitch is expressed as rise over a 12-inch run, so a "6:12" roof rises 6 inches vertically for every 12 inches it runs horizontally.
Pitch multiplier = √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²)
6:12 pitch: √(1 + (6/12)²) = √1.25 ≈ 1.118
