FLAMES: the classic playground game behind the result

FLAMES is a genuinely old paper-and-pencil game, and this calculator runs the real algorithm rather than inventing a new one. Here's how it works, worked through with two short example names:

  1. Write both names, then cross out any letter that appears in both โ€” one for one, not all at once. AMY and SAM both contain an A and an M, so cross out one A and one M from each name.
  2. Count what's left. AMY loses its A and M, leaving Y (1 letter). SAM loses its A and M, leaving S (1 letter). Total remaining letters: 2.
  3. Write out F-L-A-M-E-S, then count around and cross out every letter at the count you landed on (2, in this case), looping back to the start each time a letter is removed, until only one letter remains.

Working through that elimination for AMY and SAM lands on E โ€” Enemy. The letters stand for Friends, Love, Affection, Marriage, Enemies, and Siblings, and which one survives depends entirely on how many letters were left after cancellation, which depends entirely on the two names typed in.

It's simple enough to run with a pen and paper, which is exactly why it's been a staple of school notebooks for generations, long before it became a calculator.
