Why pitch changes the real roof area
Multiply length by width and you get the building's footprint, not its roof area. A sloped roof is a tilted plane, and a tilted plane covering the same footprint always has more actual surface than a flat one — the steeper the slope, the more material it takes to cover it. Pitch is expressed as rise over a 12-inch run, so a "6:12" roof rises 6 inches vertically for every 12 inches it runs horizontally.
Pitch multiplier = √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²)
6:12 pitch: √(1 + (6/12)²) = √1.25 ≈ 1.118
A 40 × 30 ft footprint (1,200 ft²) at a 6:12 pitch works out to 1,200 × 1.118 ≈ 1,342 ft² of actual roof surface — about 12% more material than the footprint alone would suggest. Steeper roofs push that multiplier higher still; a 12:12 pitch (a 45-degree roof) has a multiplier of about 1.414, adding over 40%.
From square feet to bundles
Roofing is priced and ordered in "squares" — 100 square feet of coverage — and each material has its own typical coverage per bundle or unit. Asphalt shingles are the most common: a standard bundle covers about 33.3 ft², so three bundles make one square.

Continuing the 1,342 ft² example above with asphalt shingles and a 10% waste allowance:
1,342 ft² × 1.10 (waste) ≈ 1,476 ft²
1,476 ÷ 33.3 ≈ 44.3 → 45 bundles (rounded up)

How much waste to plan for
A simple gable roof with few cuts can often get away with 10% waste. Roofs with more hips, valleys, dormers, skylights, or chimneys need more — 15% to 20% is common — because every seam and penetration means extra cutting and overlap that a flat rectangle calculation doesn't account for. Ridge caps, starter strips along the eaves, and underlayment add to the material list on top of the field shingles, so treat the bundle count here as the core estimate and build in room for those extras when pricing a job.

Material cost = Roofing squares (with waste) × Price per square
Total cost = Material cost + Labor cost
Material price per square varies enormously by product — asphalt shingles sit at the affordable end, while slate and standing-seam metal cost several times more per square. Labor typically runs as its own line item, often influenced by roof pitch and height as much as by area, since steep or tall roofs are slower and riskier to work on.
