"June 14th" doesn't tell you much on its own — but "a Saturday" tells you a lot about whether a venue will be free, whether guests can attend, or whether a deadline lands on a working day. Most real planning questions are really weekday questions wearing a date's clothing.
Recurring plans are usually described by weekday, not by date — "the venue is free every other Thursday," "rent is due the first Friday of the month." Next Occurrence and Previous Occurrence mode take a starting date plus a target weekday and return the nearest matching date in either direction, so you don't have to count forward on a calendar by hand.
This is also the quickest way to answer "what's the soonest weekend I could book this" or "what was the last Monday before this deadline" without opening a calendar app.
